Google is Testing New Search Console Tools Offering More Control and Insight

Google is testing new Search Console tools to give website owners and content creators more control over AI-driven visibility as well as dedicated AI performance tracking reports. With the rise of generative AI, people are understandably concerned about losing website traffic to AI generated content; these tools are intended to help businesses adapt to the changing online scene and gain profitability.
In this post we will cover:
Business and Website Owners Gain More Control with Google’s New Search Console Tools

Google listened and answered the call. According to Search Engine Journal, since the launch of AI Overviews, people have been asking for more AI-specific data and content control in the Search Console. To date AI-driven traffic hasn’t been isolated from organic search results due to report bundling.
What’s needed is click data specifically related to AI features. The missing piece are the numbers on how often people click through from AI generated appearances. This move hasn’t yet closed the gap on answering the question of AI performance vs. organic performance, but it’s a good start.
Why It Matters
Website owners will be empowered by gaining more control of content visibility and how it’s being viewed, then adding isolated AI performance reports. Increased insight means a greater understanding of how decisions are impacting the bottom line and profitability regarding online presence. This in turn will lead to more confident decisions regarding website and SEO handling.
AI Opt-Out Toggle
The AI Opt-Out Toggle offers control over the visibility of content, whether or not it appears in AI summaries, and how often it appears in AI search results. This is a domain-level setting giving people more control over appearances in Google’s generative AI experiences. Google has confirmed this feature will not be used as a ranking signal for search results landing outside of AI Search features. It only eliminates receiving impressions or traffic from the generative AI features.
For a deeper look at what opting out of Google’s AI search features means, it’s worth reviewing the trade-offs before flipping the switch.
AI Performance Reports
Dedicated generative AI performance reports will give clearer understanding of how people are finding websites, whether through AI results or organic searches.
- Reports address impression tracking, showing how often URLs appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Google Discover.
- Visibility data will be broken down by devices, specific webpages, and countries.
- Currently, click-through rates and click data are excluded.
Projected Rollouts
- Testing began on June 3, 2026 on a sub-set of UK website owners.
- Broader rollouts are expected around December 2026 continuing with specific click-data integrations.
- More precise controls are expected by March 2027.
Staying Ahead as Search Continues to Evolve
As Google continues to pursue better tools for website control and tracking, business and website owners and content creators can move forward with more confidence knowing their concerns are being addressed. Impact results will be more clear and there will be less second-guessing about where internet traffic is originating.
