Data Reveals ChatGPT Search Is Citing Less Websites

September 11, 2026

Recent data analysis reveals that ChatGPT Search is citing fewer unique domains for each search response. This comes after the GPT-5.3 Instant update. The crawl depth per site didn’t change, only the quantity of unique domains per response. Each response implies a tighter, more curated selection of websites per search.

Recent Analysis About AI Citations

The French marketing firm, Resoneo, partnered with Meteoria to complete a weeks-long study tracking daily internet prompts. This allowed them to pin-point a significant overnight drop in URLs and unique domains cited per search response. The overnight drop came on the heels of Open AI’s transition to GPT-5.3 Instant on March 4, 2026.

Why It Matters

There are a few notable issues. Chatter in the SEO community leans to the appearance of OpenAI introducing systems intended to reduce citations coming from untrustworthy or biased sources. Good for end users to gain trust in web findings. What the drop means to businesses is there are fewer websites competing for visibility within a ChatGPT response. Also, how website owners receive referral traffic from AI platforms will be affected. Fewer cited websites also means visibility drops.

As AI systems seem to prioritize frequently referenced or authoritative sources within summaries, consistent responses may be improved, but it’s definitely a cause for concern for businesses. Information responses may be less diverse which will affect website owners relying on citations for exposure and traffic, particularly internet-based only businesses.

Decreased Domains Cited

Prior to March 3, Meteoria’s finding showed the average number of unique citations per response was 19.1. The following day after the GPT-5.3 Instant update, domains / response dropped to 15.2, a considerable drop of 20.5%.

Changing Crawl Patterns

The crawl depth per domain page didn’t change. What did drop is the quantity of distinct domains crawled per search response. This change seems to be producing the Bigfoot effect, responses being dominated by many URLs of the same domain, leaving a massive search footprint by only a handful of websites. Fewer websites are sharing visibility and catching the lion’s share of traffic from ChatGPT.

The Volatility of ChatGPT Citation Numbers

The search authority platform, seoClarity, points out Open AI seems to be changing to a model that “relies on internal training rather than live web citations,...” With citation numbers jumping and rebounding, current numbers can’t be considered stable and must be continually watched.

What Does All This Mean for Future Website Navigation

The future of ChapGPT Search numbers is unclear as the world of AI unfolds. Businesses aiming to maximize online visibility are encouraged to continue to take measures that will track their internet traffic while AI systems continue modification. Businesses and website owners also need to make a play for AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, for brand visibility versus direct site visits.
